About the CEO

Wolfram R. Bauer is the entrepreneur behind the Civilisations Matter Institute e.V. in Berlin, dedicated to research and political science, and the family-owned company GCW German Clean Water GmbH & Co. KG. A further initiative in development is The Water Treatment Academy gGmbH in Wachau, Saxony, focusing on drinking water, energy and international scientific cooperation.

Bauer studied the humanities at the University of Leipzig and began his career as Provost in Wörlitz, Anhalt, where he oversaw the restoration of the palace park church, the first Neo-Gothic sacred building on mainland Europe. As a theologian, he later served as a curator at the Academy in Magdeburg and organized concerts at St. Petri Church in Wörlitz for eight years before being forced to leave the former GDR.

In Munich, he trained in radio, film and television and produced his first documentary, Rügen nach der Wende. He later worked with the Evangelische Akademie Tutzing and, following German reunification, joined the editorial leadership of the Evangelischer Pressedienst (epd) in Berlin.

After extensive international travel, Bauer became an independent producer, author and director of documentaries for international television broadcasters. His best-known films include The Kogi, about the descendants of the Tairona civilization in Colombia and their profound cultural relationship with water, and Oberwasser – Mit dem U-Boot nach Amerika, which received a major documentary film award in the United States.

Inspired by the salon tradition of Countess Marion Dönhoff, Bauer established intellectual salons at the CM-Institute, bringing together leading figures from science, politics and culture. Together with Professor Dr. Gerd K. Hartmann of the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy and teams of scientists from German research institutions, he contributed to the development of innovative thermal drinking-water treatment technologies, resulting in a patent that was subsequently transferred to GCW German Clean Water.

GCW has acquired approximately 10 hectares in Wachau near Dresden for a planned modular facility for ultra-pure water, hydrogen and premium drinking water. From 2028, the project aims to support international cooperation with the United Nations, governments and development banks in addressing the global drinking-water crisis.

The planned Water Treatment Academy in Wachau will complement this initiative as an international platform for scientists, researchers and partners, with the ambition of making Germany a center for global cooperation and technological innovation in drinking-water treatment and related energy technologies.

GCW delivers advanced industrial water treatment and purification – from Raw Water Intake, Decarbonization, Electrolysis and Crystallization to Drinking Water, Ultra Pure Water, Green Hydrogen and Recovered Salt Minerals worldwide.
